After a short FA Cup break, the Premier League is finally back with a bang, as Reds and Blues clash on Merseyside tonight. The league leaders seek to continue their domestic unbeaten run, which stretches all the way back to September 30th. They will look to keep City at arm’s length, currently sitting five points above them having played a game more. Chelsea meanwhile, after a poor start to the season, have gone unbeaten in the league since Christmas eve. Since then, they’ve won three straight against luton, Palace and Fulham, and advanced to the Carabao Cup final. The reverse fixture in London was played on the first match day of the season, and ended in a 1-1 stalemate which we predicted.
Chelsea are not too distant from the European spots, sitting only 4 points away from West Ham in fifth. However, they’ll face stiff competition from the likes of United, Newcastle and Brighton, all just one point above the Blues. Chelsea last won at Anfield in March 2021, thanks to a solitary goal by Mason Mount. This is a tough matchup to analyze due to the significant absences on both sides. Liverpool’s injury list includes Salah, Matip, Tsimikas, Thiago and Endo away on national team duty in the Asian Cup. Chelsea, on the other side, will be without Cucurella, James, Lavia, Fofana and likely Colwill and Nkunku.
Considering the absences, both teams will essentially have their staring midfield fully fit, and that is where the game will be won. If Enzo and Caiced will be able to limit Szoboszlai and MacAllister’s creative abilities, Liverpool will be strongly impaired. However, the Blues are quite light up front, and Konate and Van Dijk have been the best centre back pairing this season in England. With all that being said, we give Liverpool the edge (1.64). An Over 3 (1.70) is also recommended, as Liverpool have been quite proficient at home in terms of goalscoring. Will Liverpool stay on top?
