A big match of redemption is going down tonight in Rio de Janeiro, as Brazil take on Argentina. Both giants had underwhelming games last week, as Brazil lost away to Colombia, while Argentina lost their first game since the World Cup at home to Uruguay. The Seleção are in a somewhat complicated position in the qualifiers, having won only two of their first five. Argentina on the other hand sit atop the rest with 12 points, winning four out of five qualifiers so far. While this will be a hotly contest matchup, it is Brazil who will feel the pressure the most. The Seleção could find potentially find themselves out of the top 6 spots with a loss tonight. Although its early to make any sort of judgement on qualification, that would put massive pressure on manager Fernando Diniz.

Brazil are also facing a bit of an injury crisis upfront, which just makes matters worse. Vinicius Jr came off after a thigh issue against Colombia and will probably miss the rest of 2023. Neymar will be out until next season, and Gabriel Jesus is also not in the best condition. This means that Rodrygo will have to step up against Argentina, alongside Martinelli – who scored against Colombia – and wonderkid Endrick. Argentina will likely play the same squad that was fielded against Uruguay, with Messi and Julian Alvarez leading the line. Their backline was caught several times on the counter by Nunez in that game, so they will have to be vary of Brazil’s speed on the wings.

This is a difficult game to call, as both sides are coming off unexpected losses, to some degree. The bookmakers give Brazil a very slight edge, since they play at home, but I would suggest a risky X. An Argentina double chance is also a shout at 1.52. It would certainly be a surprise for the world champions to lose two matches in a row, especially not this big match of redemption against a bitter rival.
