The Supercopa de España mini tournament kicks off tonight in Saudi Arabia with a Madrid Derby. Atletico and Real Madrid come into this intense clash off the back of diverging runs in the domestic league. While Real have won six of their last seven, Atletico have only managed one win in their last four. In their final outing before the Supercup, the Colchoneros lost late away at revelation Girona, while Real defeated Mallorca 1-0 at home. Interestingly enough, this is the first time the Madrid sides meet in a Supercup clash since January 2020, with Real winning on penalties.
Atletico have only defeated Real Madrid twice in La Liga since 2016 – in 2022 and 2023, both times at home. In their most recent match, played in late September, Atletico handed Real their only loss in all competitions so far this year with a 3-1 victory at the Wanda Metropolitano, courtesy of a Morata double. Real Madrid lost last year’s edition of the Supercopa in the final to Barcelona by 1-3. If the Blancos do beat Atletico in Riyad tonight, they will face either Osasuna or Barcelona (again) in the final on January 14th.
Due to recent fixtures between the two sides, it would be foolish to bet against Real Madrid in this match. However, the Spanish Supercup has not spared surprises in recent years. In addition, Real face an injury crisis at the moment – although they essentially have since the start of the season. However, with Vinicius back from injury, the Blancos can count on one of the most dangerous players on the planet.
