The Champions League is back today after the group stage ended in Mid-December. The 16 teams left in the competition will battle it out for a chance ti advance to the quarterfinals. Who will reach for glory? Will there be any major upsets in these first leg matches? Let’s find out.
Copenhagen – Manchester City, Parken Stadium, Copenhagen (Tuesday 21:00 CET)
This is perhaps the easiest matchup to call in this year’s Round of 16. While Copenhagen surprisingly came out of Group A, beating Galatasaray and Manchester United to second place behind Bayern, this clash against the reigning European champions is a daunting prospect. The Danish side played bravely against every opponent in the group stage, only losing twice (at home to Bayern and away at Old Trafford). Copenhagen have only played friendly matches since mid-December, as the Danish league is currently on a Winter break. This will likely play in City’s hands, who have now won 10 straight matches in all competitions since December 16. We suggest playing an Over 3 at 1.94 in tonight’s match, as City will no doubt look to close this tie out in the first leg. Haaland anytime goalscorer at 1.64 or De Bruyne to have over 0.5 assists at 2.20 are also good odds to play on.
Copenhagen to Win – 13.00
Draw – 6.30
Manchester City to Win – 1.24
RB Leipzig – Real Madrid, Red Bull Arena, Leipzig (Tuesday 21:00 CET)
When the draw was made in December, this looked like one of the most entertaining fixtures in this round. However since then, Leipzig have been in a rather terrible run of form, winning only one of their last five league matches. Meanwhile, Real have been cruising in La Liga but have suffered a slew of injuries to key players that neutrals would love to have seen come up against Leipzig. Real will travel to Germany without the likes of Rudiger, Militao, Alaba, Courtois and, especially, Bellingham, who left the Girona game over the weekend with a muscular injury. The Blancos can still boast an amazing array of talent in midfield and attack, and will likely exploit Leipzig’s weak defence. However, the Germans themselves have some stellar firepower upfront, which is why we suggest playing Both Teams to Score (1.46), or even a Leipzig double chance at 1.58. For riskier bets, try Rodrygo anytime goalscorer (3.10).
RB Leipzig to Win – 2.95
Draw – 3.82
Real Madrid to Win – 2.33
Lazio – Bayern Munich, Stadio Olimpico, Rome (Wednesday 21:00 CET)
Along with the Copenhagen and Man City tie, this is also one that will likely be a one-sided affair. Bayern are looking like they may lose the Bundesliga title for the first time in over a decade at the hands of Leverkusen. However, Lazio are in an even deeper hole. The Roman side ended last year’s Serie A campaign in second place behind Spalletti’s Napoli; this year, they are currently 8th. Bayern’s fast-paced attack, especially on the wings, will hurt Lazio, who concede a goal a game in the league and progressed through the groups thanks to some very late goals in a couple fixtures. While Lazio did not lose a single game at home in the group stage this year, Bayern won every away match and look ready to advance deep into this competition. We suggest playing an Over 2.5 (1.71) and/or Kane anytime goalscorer at 1.81. A riskier play, but not an unreasonable one, is Only Bayern to score (2.83).
Lazio to Win – 4.75
Draw – 4.00
Bayern Munich to Win – 1.70
PSG – Real Sociedad, Parc des Princes, Paris (Wednesday 21:00 CET)
This is perhaps the matchup of the week, and who would have said that it would be between two sides that have never won the competition before? It may not be the most entertaining matchup, but it could well be one of the most balanced ones. After a great group stage campaign where they only allowed two goals and drew twice against Inter, Sociedad have slightly fallen off in past weeks. The Spanish side have failed to score in their last four games in all competitions, but have also only allowed one goal in that same time span. PSG have been quite consistent in France on the other hand, but have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last five outings. For this reason I would opt for a risky Draw (3.66), or an Under 2.5 at 1.87. If I had to pick a winner from this game it would be the home side, but I am not convinced that PSG, even with their firepower upfront, will be able to get the better of Sociedad’s sturdier backline.
PSG to Win – 1.69
Draw – 3.66
Real Sociedad to Win – 5.33
