The ATP Finals are drawing to a close today, as old and new clash in the last matchup. Novak Djokovic, who handily defeated Spanish star Carlos Alcaraz yesterday, will face in-form home star Jannik Sinner at 17:30 CET. Sinner is having the best season of his career, and has recently beaten the likes of Medvedev (twice), Tsitsipas, Rune and even Novak earlier in the week. Sinner had a rougher semifinal yesterday against number 2 in the world Medvedev, winning in three sets. However, his third set, won 6-1, was the best he’s played in the tournament so far. The Italian really seems to be in the ascendancy in the latter stages of 2023.
Sinner beat Djokovic earlier in the week 7-5, 6-7, 7-6 in what was the most entertaining game of the Finals. However, Nole and Federer jointly hold the record for the most ATP Finals wins with six each. The Serbian champions won last year’s edition in two sets against Caper Ruud in the final in Turin. This time, it will likely be a tougher challenge for Nole, as Sinner is playing the best tennis of his career and will be heavily supported by the home crowd. However, we cannot avoid calling Djokovic the favourite in this clash. Nole rarely doesn’t perform in finals, and played an outstanding match against Alcaraz yesterday. However, don’t disregard Sinner’s chances: this is his opportunity to establish himself in the echelon of the new tennis generation.
He must still win a Grand Slam to be considered at the same level of Alcaraz (or above) but that will certainly come in time if he continues to perform in this manner. This will be an amazing match, and we can’t wait to see old and new clash in the final again.
Djokovic to Win – 1.55
Sinner to Win – 2.50
